DIFFERENCE GERUND AND INFINITIVE


GERUND
Gerund is an-ing form of a verb in the 'dibendakan' (used as objects). The use of the gerund as object (noun). Its function is as follows :
As a subject. Eg: Writing is very much good.
As an object that follows the verb. Eg: I like writing very much
As an object that follows the preposition. Eg: I'm interested in writing.
Following word verb-verb go for certain. Eg: Chris went swimming the day before yesterday.
Following expressions. Eg: She is lying on the bed watching TV.
Following propositional object, such as: to be used to, to be accustomed to, object to, look forward to, to take to, confess to. Eg: I object to doing that, that Emile confess to stealing cheese.
Form a noun phrase (a noun phrase). Eg: reading book.

INFINITIVES
Infinitives are forms of "to" is added to the verb.
Its function is as follows:
As a subject. Eg: To sing is hard for a person like me.
Explaining the purpose. Eg: Simon comes here just to see you.
For passive sentences. Eg: I was told to be mature.
Once the object perpetrators. Eg: Brian asked me to listen to him closely.

Following certain verb "different"
Verbs followed by gerund: avoid, admit, appreciate, anticipate, continue, deny, detest, delay, enjoy, excuse, finish, forgive, fancy, keep, mind, Postpone, Prevent, risk, resist.
Meanwhile, followed by the infinitive verb: ask, allow, advice, beg, decide, expect, hope, intend, invite, instruct, learn, mean, need, purpose, promise, permit, want, warn, would like, tell, teach, urge.
In the case of propositional Object: (To be) used to
When the infinitive, for example: I used to cry every night. Then the old habits, the "I" would not cry every night anymore.
While the gerund, for example: I'm used to crying every night. Then the habit until now, the "I" is still like crying every night.
Note that we use for the gerund to be, while the infinitive is not.
differences Meanings
There are verbs that can be followed ing (gerund) or prefixed to (infinitive) which was not different meanings (so we can freely use). Namely: advise, begin, continue, dislike, hate, intend, like, love, prefer, propose, start.
But there are words which when used in gerund form will differ in meaning with the infinitive form, namely forget, remember, stop, regret. example:
I forget cooking a bowl of soup for you (the "I" forgot that he had to cook soup for "you")
I forget to cook a bowl of soup for you (the "I" forget, and not cooking soup for "you")
The chef stops cooking (the "chef" stop cooking)
The chef stops to cook (the "chef" to stop the cooking)
